I’ve been asked about how meditation can help when you are feeling down or when you have an illness that seems to take over your life.

Starting by being kind to yourself.  Then let this lead to being kind to others. The old saying of  ‘What goes around comes around.’  is appropriate here.

Kindness is being of a sympathetic nature.  Sympathy is the ability to understand or share the feelings of another.  Expression of sorrow for anothers misfortune.

Whether  you are meditating and you have your body relaxed or you are sitting quietly or walking along a quiet path, gently become aware of your feelings and emotions.  Start from where you are and look for a sense of contentment.

Remain aware  of what you are feeling and wish yourself well.  Have an attitude of caring for yourself.

Say:    I am  well

            I am  happy

            I am free from suffering

Let the effects of these words ripple gently into your emotions.

You can visualize a flower dropping into a still pool of water.  Watch as the flower lands.  The rippling effect spreads out around the flower.

Think of a time when you felt well and content.  Experience this feeling once more with confidence and ease.

Repeat:   I am well

                  I am happy

                  I am free from suffering

Think about a good friend.  Wish them well.

Say:    May you be well

            May you be happy

            May you be free from suffering

Become aware of the changes taking place with these words.  The change may be subtle.  The change may not be what you expected. 

Continue to be aware what happens to your emotions as you wish your friend well.

Repeat this again while you think of someone you barely know.  A bank teller, a store clerk, it can be anyone you come in contact with and can visualize. 

We all want to be well and happy and free from suffering.  By starting with yourself and then moving outward like the ripple of the water surrounding the flower that landed in the quiet pool, you will find peace and contentment in yourself. 

Be kind. Be loving.  Do these things for your self and for those around you. The results will amaze you.
